General Luna Municipal High School emerged after the closure of the private school Saint Thomas School. In May 1971, the Director of DECS Region X approved the opening of a secondary school. The local officials of the Municipality of General Luna and the DECS officials were responsible for its opening. The grand opening of classes was on June 6, 1971. The school was headed by a Secondary Principal, managing seven teachers. The compensation of the teachers was coming from the LGU fund which is 70% from the tuition fees of the students and 30% from the National Treasury.


After 18 years (18 yrs.) of its existence as Municipal High School, it became Nationalized High School on July 1, 1987. The school is headed by a Head Teacher managing fourteen teachers (14). The allotment of this school passed through DECS Siargao Division.


In July 1999, General Luna National High School was granted fiscal autonomy. A Secondary School Principal 1 managed twenty-one (21) teachers. Through fiscal autonomy, the school was given the discretionary power regarding disbursement of funds subject to proper accounting and auditing rules.


At present, GLNHS has two Annex High Schools – Consuelo National High School, Consuelo, General Luna, Surigao del Norte established in the year June 2008 and Suyangan National High School, Suyangan, General Luna, Surigao del Norte in 2007. These annexes have been established to offer free secondary education accessible to all.
